The real Nuclear energy

When people talk about nuclear energy, they are, by ignorance, lumping all nuclear energy into Fission Nuclear energy. There is another, Fusion, and unlike Fission, it has more potential, and far fewer risks.

Years ago in a Technology Forecasting class, I made a bold prediction that;

there will be commercial fusion power by the year 2000.

I was wrong, to the disappointment of the world. But I did qualify my prediction with the speculation that that first fusion plant would be a converted experimental reactor. And now my prediction may be forming, a bit latter than predicted. But when the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) does manage to get constructed it is expected to become commercially viable. Hence the Moment of truth for nuclear fusion scheme now that the Experts ‘cleared hurdle in fusion research’

Here’s hoping for a Nuclear Fission free past, and a new clean nuclear Fusion future.

RTE at Ballincollig Castle

Looks like a crew from RTE will be snooping around Ballincollig Castle tomorrow (16 March 2006) the day before St. Paddy’s Day.

Hope they find a good story about the urban encroachment that is seeking to surround the Castle grounds and destroy and archaeology that might still be there. I wish we could have gotten Time Team to do a dig for the the BBC.

More to be found at Ballincollig Heritage

So called ‘Science President’

It looks like the so called ‘Science President’ is really helping out NASA, not only has he accepted the resignation of his ignorant press suppresser, Deutsch, but he’s helping them so much that they are having to beg for financial support from other nations, and industry just to keep programs running.

NASA seeks partners as budgets tighten

So the nation that when to the moon, can’t get even get some programs off the ground.

Pain of Illness

I’ve been down the last two days with a stomach flu. It’s been along time since I had anything this painful. And while it’s not going to kill me, it has almost made we wish to be dead. I can only imagine what the victims of the Bird Flu are suffering. If it feels as bad as I do, then I sympathize all the more.

Here’s hoping that it does not spread, and hope that the stricken survive.

Here’s hoping that Pat Robertson doesn’ declare Bird Flu the wrath of God.

Conservative’s and The Fear of Change

I have been in some ‘discussions’ with the other side of the political fence. And the first impressions I have received in many of these cases is, one of fear. Having read Why I Am Not a Conservative I quote:

Conservatism proper is a legitimate, probably necessary, and certainly widespread attitude of opposition to drastic change…

…It is that by its very nature it cannot offer an alternative to the direction in which we are moving. It may succeed by its resistance to current tendencies in slowing down undesirable developments, but, since it does not indicate another direction, it cannot prevent their continuance. It has, for this reason, invariably been the fate of conservatism to be dragged along a path not of its own choosing.

It’s no wonder that often the ‘banter’ from the Right so often results in name calling. Much like a child who either does not get his way, or the way is not of his choosing, and is then resisting without being able to give an alternative.

The child in the conservative is unable to cope with change. And the faster the change the more the resistance to change.

We live at Internet speeds, information on so many subjects smacking us in the face all the time. Things like religion being confronted by Science, Politics and truth. Mass Media, and Blogs. All constitute changes that draw fire from the conservatives.

There was a great program on RTE about Petrol Dollars and Petrol Euros and the real reason for the invasion of Iraq. ‘The continuation of American Dominance through the perpetuation of the Petrol Dollar as the foundation of the American Economy.’ Change, creates Fear, fear of what might happen to the U.S. economy which is founded almost entirely on the non renewable resource of oil.

And just like the child, the conservative, who can not offer up an alternative (like alternative energy) the conservatives resist, like a child, clutching onto the bitter end of a dropped stick of candy. Unable to see another new piece to suck on. The conservatives will never see another source of economic stability other than Oil.

So rather than accept change, a change that will come anyway, they would rather kill thousands, rob and pillage billions from others to hold on to their savior, God of Oil.

There will be Petrol Euros, and Evolution is a fact. If we could put all the conservatives into a padded cell until the changes that will happen, do. We are stuck educating the conservatives with the truth. Baby spoons anyone?

Whither we like them or not, such changes are going to happen. Unless we are open-minded enough, meaning liberal enough, to discover alternatives to these changes. we will cease to continue on this planet.

The future will happen without us, if it has to.

This should scare everyone.

There is nothing in the world that won’t be used to increase taxes. Navigating future for road charges. GPS was invented to help navigate, defend and attack. Not as a means to spy on and make money from new taxes.

Powerful applications are expected on the roads; the Galileo network would allow a vehicle’s exact movements to be tracked, presenting new possibilities for road-user charging and tolling.

And it’s not like the government will stop road tax and petrol dutys. After all, they will claim that they must continue, “because not all vehicle’s are currently equipped with the GPS” nanny monitors.

But beyond this as a money making tool, what about the privacy issues.

Can you imagine.

Maybe you should.

Controlling the Messenger

I have been thinking about censorship for some time. More often it has been in respect to the Internet. But the new CES show is on, and there is a wealth of new XM satellite equipment coming to market. And this is now making ‘radio’ content, a global, one source issue.

I have mentioned before that if you can not control the message, then the next best thing is to control the messenger. This applies for news on the internet, and now news on the XM network. Systems like CNN and BBC have always known this, but as there were multiple channels to crosscheck and verify the quality of information. There was less ability to control the content of the message.

Now that the content can be in a singe channel, XM, and digital. Controlled content can now be sent to places that were unreachable before, even beyond the reach of the internet.

Beyond 1’s and 0’s, or rather between.

This artical is interesting not because Quantum computers will be faster smaller versions of what we already have. But that they will be able to compute the vast space between Zero (0) and one (1).

Today’s computers work by manipulating bits that exist as either 0s or 1s. What makes quantum computing so powerful is that quantum bits (or qubits) have an infinite choice of values,

Light is the solution. It’s also the problem. That’s the paradox HP Labs’ Quantum Information Processing Group is beginning to unravel with its research into optical quantum computing. The group has been investigating ways to use photons, or light particles, for information processing, rather than the electrons used in digital electronic computers today. Their work holds promise for someday developing faster, more powerful and more secure computer networks.

Strict Constitutional Constructs

I have been thinking about Republicans and their belief that Judges who uphold a strict constitutional interpretation of the law is their Ideal. In truth, this would be the antithesis of the current Republican or rather Neo-Con perspective. Their current belief that ‘Activist’ Judges are the cause of all social Ills in the U.S. are misplaced. Mostly due to the sad truth that most Congressmen and Senators, not to mention the current President, Vice-President and most of their staff’s have never read the constitution, or the Bill-of-Rights.

If the current nominee to the Supreme court, Samuel Alito, was telling the truth. That he is of a strict constitutional mindset, the first thing to be struck down, wouldn’t be Roe-vs-Wade, but the Patriot-Act, Illegal Wiretaps, and any other attack on the foundations of the Separation of Church and State, Freedom of Speech, Freedom of assembly and Due Process.

This can be illustrated by the results of the Dover case and the ruling made by U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III. Judge Jones is a Strict Constructionist, and the reading of his ruling demonstrates that not only is this not the results of and ‘Activist’ judge, but a truly strict interpretation of U.S. Constitution. And contrary to the current Republican agenda being pushed by the current administration.

So I am really wonders if this is not just another Republican spin on the english language. When the Republicans ask for Strict Constructionist in the courts. Their true meaning is Neo-Con ‘Activists’.

So here’s hoping for a real Strict Constructionist nominee to the Supreme Court. A defeat for the Neo-Con’s and truly Merry Christmas for the rest of us.

Universal applicability of new material, Governmentium.

Time for some humor.

A major research institution has recently announced the discovery of the heaviest element yet known to science. The new element has been named “Governmentium.” Governmentium has one neutron, 12 assistant neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons, and 224 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.

These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of particles called peons.

Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A minute amount of Governmentium causes one reaction to take over four days to complete, when it would normally take less than a second.

Governmentium has a normal shelf-life of 4 years; it does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places.

In fact, Governmentium’s mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes.

This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a certain quantity in concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as “Critical Morass.”

When catalyzed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium — an element which radiates just as much energy as the Governmentium since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons.

Apply material lightly.

Traffic Lights in a Democratic Republic

Having read again that the U.S. isn’t really a true democracy, but a republic. A republic that has at it roots, protections of the rights of the minority. It brings to light more of the ‘Republican’ goals, to replace the Republic with a democracy, where the majority requires the conformance of the minority. To reflect in everything they profess, no Gay rights, no Evolution, no Abortion, NO PERSONAL CHOICE only the majority chooses what it right, and correct for everyone. And only what is commercially correct. Everyone must believe in Christmas, Christmas is good for business.

I prefer the protection of the Republic for the rights of the individual and minority groups. Like freedom of speech, and religion.

I have often often wonder how ‘founded’ this ideal is, in the real world. And it came to me, traffic lights. (I know very strange)

Have you ever sat a traffic light, where no cars were crossing. Or where you are in a main traffic way, and the lights stop you, and hundreds of other car to allow only one car to cross or enter your traffic? That is the republic in action, protecting the single car from the majority of others from entering or crossing the lane.

In Ireland and other European countries, the ’roundabout’ is common, a truly democratic traffic condition, a single car cannot enter or cross until there is a break in the majority lane. I can not count the times when I have heard ’roundabouts’ equated with ‘chaos’ and they are. The term ‘Fate favors the Foolish’ can be attributed to roundabouts. But here in Ireland, and I’m sure in other places as well, traffic lights have been instituted at roundabouts, because in high traffic periods, roundabouts (ie. democracies) cannot cope. The republic rules, to correct the inadequacy of the democratic chaos created by the roundabout.

Here’s hoping.
