Vista’s new lemmings

Having seen the underoverwhelming advertising for Windows Vista, and hearing that as a result, PC sales have skyrocketed (a whole 5% represents a very low sky or a very short rocket). I felt compelled to repost an old favorite, Lemmings, one of the better Apple Ads. And it left me wondering if the surge in PC sales was to buy PC’s before they were loaded with Vista so that people could retain compatibility, and not become yet another victim of Microsoft Beta-2 testing. We did, as we just replaced the wife’s Sony laptop with new HP loaded with XP-Pro. We have tried Vista and determined that it is, really, just an XP service pack, and also required retraining as there was little that remained familiar in the interfaces. So the question arises, if you have to retrain, why not switch. So without further ado, Lemmings;

  1. This is in contrast to Apple users who queue for hours to be first to buy the latest version of their lifestyle OS. I’ve held off buying a new PC to get one with Vista. I’ve run the Beta on a VM and I think it’s a big improvement in usability and general slickness. But it’s just a tool.

  3. The sysadmin at the office is terrified that the Boss, who is prone to impulse buying, will go out and buy and bring in a Vista laptop with no way to secure it, no real firewall, no virus protection and no way to know what version out of 5, will work with the old versions of exchange server, and company applications. Not to mention the OpenSwan VPN environment and L2TP settings. We already know that the e-commerce AJAX application isn’t completely compatible with Internet Exploder 7. Things like quicktime don’t even work there yet, does that give you a clue about monopoly control of media playing? Funny how the iPod music files get corrupted in Vista….

    We could go on and on. Maybe we could do a BarCamp on the old battlefield 😉

  5. BarCamp is a top idea! “The Future of Platforms”.

    We can also figure out who’s to blame for the iPod problem. BillG trying to shaft Old Reality Distortion Field, or the other way around 🙂

    Toni Schneider (CEO of Automattic) did a great post on the fact that by and large the OS is less important now as long as it can run Firefox.

    After reading it I’m thinking maybe a €400 laptop is the way to go rather than a €1400 one. I’m generally happy with Ubuntu when it has all the drivers for the machines I use it on.

    Your sysadmin would dread me. I was in one place where the machines were totally locked down so when I travelled I still wasn’t able to run Skype or IM. I conned them into giving me a second harddrive to replace the DVD drive “for backup purposes”. Then I installed Ubuntu as a dual boot and had all the apps I needed when I travelled.

  7. You and me both, I worked at a place that had locked down USB flash drives from working, so I used a digital camera to transfer files to and from my office computer. There is always a way around lockdowns 😉
