I am getting this exact same error – did you figure it out?
No, still unresolved, I suspect that the location in my file system that I have WordPress installed in is the cause.

Closer, just no joy.
having exact issue on a client site. Not pleased.
Have you figured this out? It’s making me insane too. I’ve tried changing permissions on wp-content folder to 777, tried deleting “upgrade” folder and recreating. Still no joy.
Not yet, I’ve done pretty much the same things you did, and nothing. I’m kinda waiting on the 3.0.2 release, maybe they’ll get it right then. 🙁
3.02 upgrade exact same problem with automatic upgrade. So I deleted the install and uploaded manually – which worked. However, the automatic upgrade still fails with the same error – OMG!
You don’t need to delete or rename the upgrade folder/ file. Just delete the failed files inside of it. Those are the problem. I have heard some people get the auto upgrade working after several tries. But, you have to get rid of those failed files in wp-content/upgrade in between each new try.
