One of the glaring gaps in Apple Mac-OSX is the near total lack of support for USB webcams. I often browse the PC shops hoping to see a OSX label on one of the fancy webcams, but it never happens. So when Update 10.4.9 came I was hopeful that the bullet point “Includes iChat support for USB Video Class webcams” that there would finally be support for webcams other than the Apple iSight. But not a single word of which ones were supported. So still no hope for video for my old Mac’s and with the removal of all iSight webcams from Europe I will never do video Skype, or iChat.

Or you could do one of two things:
Support for USB cams was mentioned as a feature for Leopard. Leopard opens up other “generic” equipment for support as well. I’ve not tested this as yet (don’t have any USB cams) but that’s the buzz at WWDC.
Just buy iChatUSBCam

Not bad for $9.95.

I suppose they ultimately wish you’d buy an iMac with its builtin cam.
A google suggests that this class is one which Xp SP2, linux et al can recognise without additional drivers so that might help..

USB Video Class (UVC) means that webcams which support this USB device class should work. Cheaper cameras with a proprietary protocol and binary-only driver won’t.
Windows Vista required that webcams support USB video class which should help.

All good suggestions, Guy’s, but I have an old iBook (500Mhz) with usb 1.1’s and an old iMac Flat panel (800Mhz) also with usb 1.1. So the XBox idea is out. also most of the video_device_class are also USB 2.0 devices so no joy there either. But thanks. I am looking for an iFire, iSweet or iBot (FW) which are firewire cameras
