H.R. 5875 and a hope in Hell

I find this amusing that The Iraq War Powers Repeal Act of 2006, H.R. 5875 essentially is taking George Bush at his word from his “mission accomplished” in May 2003. In an argument I used on this blog along time ago I mentioned that if we had already declared a victory, the GOP and Bush could save face and withdraw. The point is that this war has never been over liberating the Iraqi people, or removing sadam, or WMD’s. If this bill ever gets passed it will be a clear illustration of that fact. Hence it will never get out of house of representatives.

But there is still a hope in hell.

Because God knows you can’t have a government represent it’s citizens

File this under stupid if it weren’t so funny Sad.

Anti-Americanism prompts push for “citizen diplomacy”

By Bernd Debusmann, Special Correspondent
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – With anti-American sentiment at unprecedented levels around the world, Americans worried about their country’s low standing are pushing a grassroots campaign to change foreign perceptions of the United States “one handshake at a time.”

The idea is to turn millions of Americans into “citizen diplomats” who use personal meetings with foreigners to counter the ugly image of the United States shown in a series of international public opinion polls. They show widespread negative attitudes not only toward U.S. policies but also toward the American people and, increasingly, even American products.

To stem the relentless decline of America’s international standing — a dramatic change from the almost universal sympathy for the country immediately after the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington –leaders of more than 30 civic organizations formed a “Coalition for Citizen Diplomacy” two years ago.

The coalition, a loose alliance of national, state and community groups, held its first national summit in July in Washington, where speakers deplored the sorry state of the U.S. image but expressed hope that individual action and international people-to-people exchanges could go a long way toward improving things.

Wouldn’t just be easier to impeach the President and throw out the Congress and elect new officials that DO represent the American People?

I’ll take my toys and go home. :-P

The democrats in the Senate did not want to confirm John Bolton for the post in the U.N. because he was a bully. And now we see why Apologise or we’ll cut your funding Grow a thicker skin John. It won’t matter if someone Apologizes, you have made the U.S. look like a fool and a bully. Just like a kid who threatens to take his toy’s and goes home. You look like that bully you denied you were in the Senate. Grow up! You represent the United States of America, not your (pantywaist) self.

Update: Having grown up in “Middle America”, they are stupid and undereducated. For evidence just look for the states that are pushing Intelligent Design over Evolution 😉

UK gardening

There was this old Muslim in the U.K. and he sent an email to his son in Afghanistan asking if he was going to come home to England to help him in the summer. The son wrote home, telling his father that he would not be able to help visit that summer, and for his father not to dig up those things in the back garden.

The next day police and Scotland yard arrived at the fathers house banishing guns and shovels and proceeded to completely dig up the man’s garden. After many hours and no results the police apologized and left.

The next day the son sent another email explaining that he was sorry he could not help his father in that garden, so he did next best thing and had the police help cultivate the garden.

Do you know?

Do you know how hard it is to get office work done, on a Clear Warm Cloudless Cork Friday Afternoon ahead of a Bank holiday weekend?

Feels almost like winning the lottery. and almost as useful as dreaming about it. At least with regards to productivity.

8 new Galways in the next 10 years

I was listening to a program on RTE last night, talking about communities and community spirit. And then the announcer dropped the above phrase, “…construction of 8 new Galway’s in the next 10 years” to support the population growth. And while the speaker was commiserating the loss of community spirit and belonging. He was standing in a Suburb of Dublin, he then turn and indicated the the huge estates that represented the current growth pattern would have to grow up, and increase in density to be able to cope with the population growth.

And I thought that was just foolish, and wished that the decentralization didn’t happen years ago. A bigger Dublin? What would you call the Big Smoke then, The Humongous Smoke Can you imagine?

And what about the community spirit, building a bigger Dublin or for that matter a higher density Dublin is just insane. Dublin already is on the fringe of Irish culture. Making it bigger would be unbelievable. And there would be no community at all.
