Dell to Close Limerick Plant

Dell has discovered a clever way to close it’s Limerick as Dell plans to sell plants worldwide. The limerick Plant has been known for some time to be less profitable than those in the far east and eastern Europe. When it comes to purchasing the Limerick plant there will be no takers and it will have to close. Dell wins, as it will not have to give up it’s corporate tax breaks, and doesn’t look like the villain.

  1. it’s all about costs….ireland has been too expensive for a long time now…you can’t expect to get 50K plus share options for putting PC’s together. If anything the modern irish worker expects more than their eastern rivals. and higher wages mean higher prices in shops etc which increase demand for higher wages. it’a slap in the face that ireland needed maybe 10 years ago..weak gov if you ask me. We can all remember grumbling about costs and wages just glad i don’t live there anymore

  5. Mis management. Limerick is profitable. Greed. Pride. Ignorance. All driving to close the plants ww because Dell wants to be #1 again. At any cost.

  7. fair enough lynda. but lets face it…it’s business, if you could save money by moving your business elsewhere you would. but why would we expect more? just because a country is wealthy why do you think you deserve more?

  9. Back in the 90’s I worked for DEC in the UK. I had to. I was unable to lead a normal life on Army wages. I returned to Ireland in 1999 and took up empolyment with Dell. I progressed through the ranks fairly easliy. I am a qualified technician. My take home is 30k. The only thing thats killing Dell in Ireland are the uber greedy shareholders. Plain and simple. In ’98 DEC shut down all it’s UK plants and left. No warnings. In Reading 5000 were out of work overnight. It is the MO of all US companies. As soon as the going gets tough they get going. And the only reason they are going is SHARE HOLDERS GREED.

  11. Dell will move production out of Ireland. They will be the first of many companies to do so over the next year. The going has got tough, just ask any Dell shareholder who has lost half there investment over the last 12 mths.

  13. Dell’s problem in Limerick was that they sacrificed quality for volume, combine that with
inept management whose idea of industrial relations was just to bully workers and you have
    a recipe for failure.

  15. There she blows…moving to poland to save money. Ireland should learn from this. It’s high wages that are the problem Instead don’t get a new car every 2 years and stop hiring limos for you kids holy communion. Would a pay cut have kept the jobs there. Probably not. Unions wouldn’t have it.

  17. It will always be about maximizing profit. It will never be about running a sustainable stable business where they treat employees as people. When it’s Poland’s turn, then Dell will drop them also, and find cheap meat someplace else.

Save them the trouble, and stop buying Dell computers, and put them out of their misery.

  21. Charles fair enough….no unions in dell..my mistake
but i wonder what min wage is for dell workers. looking at the news the cars pulling out of the car park looked expensive. Also it’s not greed it’s business. would you sell your house and try to make a profit??…it’s always greed when someone else does it. I do feel sorry for the workers but this kinda thing will happen more and more. too much money too quickly. eveybody lost the run of themselves. a slap in the face that was sadly needed.

  23. Profit is not greed, true, but the constant attempt to INCREASE profit IS greed! Dell was earning a profit, but Dell is seeking to increase profit. If a company makes a profit of 1$ it’s successful, this means that it paid all the bills and stayed ahead of inflation. To expect to increase the profit all the time, means you have to make things cheaper, give the customer less for their money or make more products.

The Polish plant is a not expected to produce more product, and hopefully Dell will give the customer what they paid for. So what Dell is doing is reducing the cost of making the product by reducing labor costs, Personnel, Meat! Why not just use robots?

If Dell were less greedy, they could make everyone happy from employees to customer by just keeping the profit levels flat. This is an Apple model, Charge what the product costs. It’s also why the ‘experts’ always predict Apple’s failure.

  25. In my opinion one of the key reasons for dell leaving ireland were frieght costs. Since its an island a lot of material had to be air freighted which is not sustainable. Also, it was too expensive to keep 2 european plants open when neither of them were at full capacity, If there were more demand for PC’s in europe Lim may not have got the chop

  27. Very likely, and Dell almost missed the NetBook bandwagon, They were in trouble before the banking fiasco, and they may not survive at all.
